CCR lacks the longevity. But I think the defining element of American rock is that it is fiercely independent and does not need industry support. It continues regardless of trends.

In that vein, REM. Maybe the Replacements.

I might have missed it, but for the modern part, how has no one brought up White Stripes?

I didn't go thru this whole thread, but my vote goes to Guns 'N Roses. I know that one article posted a while back had LZ as the archetype rock band, but for me, when i think of 2 bands that epitomize rock 'n roll as i thought of it growing up, the music, the attitude the life style, its The Rolling Stones and Guns N' Roses.
