Meachem was a surprise cuz they did go need over BPA. He was a stretch pick

I remember this differently. You're right that Olsen and Poz were the two that were most projected to go to the Saints, but Meach was a BPA pick. He was expected to go higher, and he was considered a fall that year. Also we had just hit big on Colston, and WR wasn't considered a need at that time.

Ellis only slight surprise

He was a surprise, because all the talk was trade up for Dorsey or stay put and take Mayo. When the trade happened, at that moment it was obvious; however, leading up to the draft it was not.

Jordan i had mocked to NOLA in January

You may have, but the national media were focussed on Ingram (which actually wound up happening) and other players (which I don't recall). Jordan was expected to be gone by that point. He wasn't, and he was taken. But this is less of a "surprise" in that it was at a position of need.

So for me I count 2 out of 7 as surprise picks

I still count 2 as accurate. There are 2 more that weren't surprises as in "out of left field," but they still weren't what the pundits in were saying.

It relates to this year in that all everyone is projecting to us is OLB, and it seems that whenever the "obvious" pick is projected to us, more often then not the Saints pull a "surprise" and pick something else. There are soooo many needs on this team that focusing on just OLB seems extrememly short sighted to me, but that seems to be the case. Funny thing is that every year LB is touted as a need position for us, yet they have never taken a 1st round LB under Paeyton.

Even though blues basically stole my post, I agree with him.

We all knew Bush and Jenkings.
We knew it was going to be Dorsey, Ellis or Mayo.
We had just cut Grant, so we knew we were going DE and likely to get Jordan unless Watts or someone else fell to us. Ingram was talked about, but most didn't expect it over a need at DE.

Meachem was a surprise. I wanted Olsen.
PRob was a surprise because we had just won the Superbowl and were truly going BPA and nobody had him there.

This year, it will be either OLB, S, NT or OT (Bushrod's situation will let us know more before the draft.) I don't see a surprise unless we trade.

everyone is projecting to us is OLB,

I think that has to do more with the draft depth

if ya look at needs-

OLB- there's Jordan, Jones, Mingo, and prolly Ansah that could be a #15 value.

NT- only Lotulelei is a must pick, Hankins maybe or maybe not a take

S- Vacarro is a minor stretch at #15 IMO, this need value changes dramatically with a Harper cut

OT- another unknown until free agency is done, I'm not expecting LT to be a hole going into the draft. Three guys are surefire values there- Jockel, Fisher, & Johnson

CB- Milliner and Rhodes are clean #15s. I don't expect either to be available though.

OG Warmack, WR Patterson, maybe Ogletree, some QBs, etc might all warrant a #15 but I'd be surprised. None of them are must picks there. The surprises are usually a faller that you can't pass on (Deuce) or when you stretch. OLB to me is projected more frequently for the supply/demand ratio being good (4 of'em) even though it is a major need.
