we have not seen them draft what we or the mocks had projected them to do most years.

Disagree.
Bush everyone knew it was him or Mario.
Meachem was a surprise cuz they did go need over BPA. He was a stretch pick. Anticipated Greg Olsen or Pozluzsny (who would have been better)
Ellis only slight surprise. I thought Jerod Mayo at #10. It was clear what they were going for when trading up
'09 was sure it would be Jenkins or Cushing
PRob was another stretch pick as a surrpise. I was pulling for Daryl Washington LB or Nate Allen S. Wish we had them today too.
Jordan i had mocked to NOLA in January
There's no real mockingor guessing 3rd rders. Was pretty proud of having Hicks in my final mock although 5th Rd

So for me I count 2 out of 7 as surprise picks. Also the higher you pick the more you can hone down the list. At #10 in 2008 the list is down to 4-5 anticipated names. At #32 in '10 you're starting to guess out of 10-15 possibilities.

I think it is more often just the result of how their big board stands when the pick comes around. Like out of Mingo, Dion Jordan, Jarvis Jones, and Ansah I bet you could find them in every conceivable order on teams big boards. They also could be quite varied. One team might have Mingo at the top with a Top 5 grade. Another team might have him behind all the others scored as a Top 25 player.

I remember this differently. You're right that Olsen and Poz were the two that were most projected to go to the Saints, but Meach was a BPA pick. He was expected to go higher, and he was considered a fall that year. Also we had just hit big on Colston, and WR wasn't considered a need at that time.

He was a surprise, because all the talk was trade up for Dorsey or stay put and take Mayo. When the trade happened, at that moment it was obvious; however, leading up to the draft it was not.

You may have, but the national media were focussed on Ingram (which actually wound up happening) and other players (which I don't recall). Jordan was expected to be gone by that point. He wasn't, and he was taken. But this is less of a "surprise" in that it was at a position of need.

I still count 2 as accurate. There are 2 more that weren't surprises as in "out of left field," but they still weren't what the pundits in were saying.

It relates to this year in that all everyone is projecting to us is OLB, and it seems that whenever the "obvious" pick is projected to us, more often then not the Saints pull a "surprise" and pick something else. There are soooo many needs on this team that focusing on just OLB seems extrememly short sighted to me, but that seems to be the case. Funny thing is that every year LB is touted as a need position for us, yet they have never taken a 1st round LB under Paeyton.
