I did a breakdown a couple of weeks back among foreigners, U.S. players from college, and U.S. players straight from HS, on the current Team USA and the last Major League All-Star rosters.
It turns out that foreigners make up well over 1/3 of the hitters, but that U.S. players from college make up well over 1/3 of the pitchers... more so than even the U.S. players straight from HS.
Thus, I think that the way the college game has evolved, for whatever reason, there is much more top talent at pitcher than there is top talent at other positions. (I don't think this was necessarily the case in the 1980s though, so maybe it's a cyclical thing.)
