I got the anthology on bluray for Christmas and I watched them one weekend, Alien and Aliens twice. The differences between 1,2 to 3,4 is night and day.

So do you prefer "Dallas ending" in this one or in the theatrical/tv version?

Awesome. It's a great movie to begin with but the director's cut is so cool.

Most of the scenes cut out are little parts except for the part where Brett walks into the A/C room when he's looking for Jones, and the camera cuts back to way up into the ceiling. You see the Alien swinging back and forth while it's sitting on the dangling chains. It's really cool. I really wish they would've put that in the theatrical version.

I love watching that part.

Wasn't crazy about the Dallas ending because it killed Brett with it's tongue or whatever, so there was no point in cocooning him. Dallas, sure but it was better without that part.

Director cut differences

The big one was the exclusion in the theatrical version of the colony before finding the derelict ship. Ripley mentioned that it was Burke who sent a crew there but you never know the back story. In the directors cut you see this.

Most of the other stuff is fun extras.

So if someone were to watch this for the first time, which would be better?

Ironically, I remember reading somewhere that Ridley Scott didn't want to do a "director's cut" of the movie when requested by the studio to celebrate one of the anniversaries of the movie. Ridley felt the original theatrical version was the perfect version of the film. Hard to argue with the director there and it somewhat takes away from the director's cut version when watching...

Regardless, definitely one of if not my favorite SciFi movies of all time.

Should have kept the sentries in it. Would have given a better concept of time and an appreciation of the intelligence of the aliens.

In Aliens, absolutely. That was badass.

Alien is great with or without the deleted scenes but I do prefer the director's cut better.

It also gave you an idea of the hopelessness they must have been feeling. Each gun had 450 round of ammo and the aliens took every single bullet except for 10.

At that point in the movie the audience understands the odds are stacked VERY high against anybody getting out of there alive.

Funny thing is that the 2st time I saw Aliens was on network TV and it was the uncut version. The scene where the colonist discover the ship previously seen in Alien and the sentry guns was all in the version I saw. After that I only saw the theatrical version until the Director's Cut came out.

ETA: I have to say that Aliens is the best sci-fi movie ever made. Nothing tops it for this guy.
