I won't do it with a list of 40 all time movies. I did use it as kind ofa tie breaker for decade lists, in part as a way to include more movies

How are you guys coming up with your lists? Going through IMDb's top 250 (or a similar list) and picking out the ones you like? Basically, what I did was go through all the movies I own - I only buy movies I like, obviously - and added a few on my wish list. [Yes, I keep a wish list of movies I want to buy.] Most of my list comes from the '90s and 2000s because I just haven't seen many old movies.
ETA: One thing that stood out to me while making my list was how stacked 1995 was. Se7en, Braveheart, Apollo 13, The Usual Suspects, and Heat. Plus some others, I'm sure.
