I don't think it has anything to do with a predisposition at all, and everything to do with culture. As a musician myself, I'm convinced that we are influenced by everything that we hear from our favorite music to the melody your doorbell chime plays. And, what we hear is predominantly driven by culture.

That's why Indian music sounds like Indian music, African like African etc. After all you don't see many hair metal bands out of Zimbabwe do you?

To me what makes someone a real musician is the ability to take the way they have been cultured and the music that entails, blend that with other influences, and spit out their own take on the whole thing.
excellent point.

i grew up on my parents music and i know that the classic rock/country helped steer me the direction i went, but now my dad hates most of my music. he accuses me of liking songs that will never be played on the radio, which is possibly true, but i don't know for certain because i only turn it on for the minute and a half when my ipod is resetting.

I'd take that as a compliment. The industry is changing and for many the "radio" is obsolete. People want more than what the handful of artists radio executives have approved can provide, and with the internet consumers have it.
