Landman advice

I'm graduating from LSU in May and I'm interested in becoming a landman. I believe I've seen some posters on here that are landmen so I'm hoping they see this.
How did you get started? My gf's dad has been one for a couple of years. I hope he can get me a few leads but if not then I have no idea where to start. Travel 8 hours to go to seminars? I'll try to email a few of the BR AAPL officers to see what that gets me.
Any help would be appreciated.

You need a hookup for field work...most brokers are out of Lafayette...Another option is to get your PLM at a school that offers the program and try to get an in-house job.

Could I get a few years experience of field work then find an in-house job without a PLM degree?

Not impossible but very unlikely considering the number of plms now coming out of college...field and in-house are completely different jobs.

Just about everyone I work with of have worked with has been because of knowing someone.
not likely

Would I always be in small towns in BFE Texas? I don't mind doing that for 5 or so years but after that I'd like to be able to move somewhere for an extended period. What exactly is in house? Sorry I'm a bit inexperienced with O&G.

or La, Ms, OH, Pa, etc...
If traveling is not for you, field work is not for you.

I don't mind traveling for 5 or so years out of college. Just wondering what my possibilities would be with experience in the field and wanting to stay in one area for awhile.

I'm planning on going this route through ULL. Even though its not a requirement, a lot of firms are wanting degrees. If anybody has in knowledge of it, I'm curious how PLM grads fare in job placement coming out of school.

I have a Business degree from LSU and I worked with a girl with a PLM degree from ULL. Nothing she learned in her program helped her at all in the field. She had a hard time for a while but then got a job in house with sun coast. She also knew someone that helped her obtain that.

If you don't mind me asking, are you in-house or field? Do you enjoy the job? I've done a lot of research on the career and have seen many times that networking is a must. I plan on joining AAPL and the LAPL when I move to Lafayette if not solely for the purpose of making contacts in the field.

So I should stop considering going to ULL to get a PLM degree to go along with my Finance degree from LSU

I worked in house in houston for a year after I graduated. I hated it. I hated being in the office everyday. Some of it was the people in the office, but mostly me being stuck behind my desk.
Now I'm in the field and I travel A LOT. The travel isnt for every one, but Im 26, not married, and have no children. Im ok with it now.

Do what you think is best for you, but I wouldnt do that. Obtaining Experience and connections will serve you well. Sounds like you already have one with your GF's Father. Use it.

Thanks for the advice.
Not trying to get too personal but what's your plan for the future? Just wondering if you were to settle down with a family would you still be in the field? Or would you try to do something else?

Or you could be stuck at home doing curative for 8 months.
Re: going in house. I'm still trying to find an in-house job. I don't have a PLM but I do have a JD. It seems like no matter the job, in this economy companies are looking for 5 and 10 year guys. I was talking to a ROW agent who works in Houston who told me his company doesn't even hire new guys without a law degree. That's grim.

True. But field work can be fickle. I get emails every week from people with MUCH more experience than me looking for work. Today I got a sob story email from a friend whose husband has 7 years of experience and has been out of work for 6 months.

Go to all the job fairs you can. The O&G companies will be at most of them. There are internships for in house landman jobs.

I've looked at a ton of job posting. Most seem to require at least 5 years experience. Leaving me to wonder how exactly anybody starts out.

I wish I had better news, but I got my first job from my girlfriend's dad who has been in-house for a small independent for 20 years.

not surprised at that. I don't really have any personal connections like that which is why I plan to join LAPL and go to meetings/events with the hopes of meeting as many folks as I can.

That's a good strategy. You might also searching for "land tech" "land analyst" "land representative" etc. when searching indeed. What I do is search "land" in Louisiana & Texas. Those are in the land department, but mostly assisting the landman and have much lower qualifications - certainly room for upward mobility. I've been doing this for 16 months and figured I'd be in-house with a truck allowance by now. If things don't change in another 6 months I'm ditching this business for personal injury law.
