I understand completely...BUT!!!...
Someone who does not play golf but 10 times a year is not going to spend the extra money to get fitted by you or anyone else for that matter. I'm going to take a shot in the dark here on what you charge to get guys up and going...
Fitting $150-$200
Irons -MSRP ($899)
Driver/woods - MSRP $300/$500
Reshafting - iron set $200 ($100 if shafts don't need to be ordered)
- Woods $25+cost of shaft(if shafts need ordered) (X3)
Grips - $8 X 13 ($104)
Putter - $200
Just on the low end you are looking at $2,004 just to get started.
Instead, the average golfers go spend $300-$500 at the big box stores and get out on the course that afternoon! Which for my side of the business is great, for yours not so much. Not one person who is a weekend warrior is going to spend $2000 on a new set, and they only way they are is if they are a person of means!
This is a pretty good guess. It does get pricy, and for some its worth it. I just feel bad when I am at the driving range and see a fellow golfer with a $1000 set of blade irons and he is struggling to hit the ball 30 yards.
