It goes back to the audience being in on a joke that the characters are not. We're supposed to laugh at them, not with them.

I get that, but the way I read his statement was that he was saying the characters are bad and cynical people, and I don't agree with that. Obviously we are laughing at them because of how silly Sheldon is and how everyone has to put up with him. You're also laughing at them, because they are nerds, which is fine. I'm a nerd myself, and I understand some things we do are silly
