It's a country thing and actually I think it may be more a north/central LA thing. My wife's grandma is from Winnsboro and called it "red gravy" even though she was 100% Italian.

In the northeast, I'm pretty sure Italian Americans refer to red sauce as gravy. Ask Tony Soprano.

I just always think it sounds a little strange.
