"it's a south, la camp thing"

Being from south Louisiana & spending a lot of time at camps, I have to say I have NEVER heard of putting olives in gravies. In fact, if someone at the camp put olives in the gravy, we'd probably figure he was drunk. I've had them in spegg sauce but never a "rice & gravy". This may be the new "tomatoes in gumbo war".

This I agree with.

The only time I've seen someone put olives in any type of gravy whether it be red or brown was in Baton Rouge at a friend of mines mothers’ house. Worst spaghetti I ever ate and I love olives. I also had a good Italian friend of mine growing up and even his mom didn't put olives in a gravy.

I see more mushrooms in gravies than olives.

The you haven't been to enough. I've been to a couple camps that had olives in a red gravy and sauce piquante. Cocodrie fishing camp and a duck camp off the intercostal.
