You might want to stick to heavier grain bullets for more payload at closer ranges. Pistol hunting isn't normally a long range sport. Same goes with most hunting situations. Bow, rifle, pistol, or shotgun you need a well placed ethical shot to achieve the best results.

It will be a few years before I'm ready to shoot a deer past 30yards anyway. Got to get my aim and steadyness much better.

I'm pretty confident that a 180gr buffalo bore hardcast out if a 6.5" barrel will do it out to about 40-50 yards if I hold up on my end.
I wouldn't want to try anything else though. You need something like 16" of barrel and a good hot load to make the .357 a true consistent deer hammer.

Shameless plug of a great product from a fine company.
Marline 1894C

I'm talking bow range here, meaning 40 yards max. You guys have beat me down.... 158 or 180 it is.

Love that rifle.
I've got a Marlin 1895guide gun in .450 Marlin.
It's like that rifle on steroids.

I'd love to have one.
Moral of the story, if your handgun isn't as big as the gun you posted, you should load it with the most potent stuff your gun/wrist can handle to give yourself the best chance.
You're handicapping yourself big time by bringing a .357 magnum revolver. Don't make it worse by loading it with ".357 minimum" loads.

It's not for the faint of heart.
It is ported so it relieves some of the kick. It will lay a pig out with a quickness.

We'd just rather see you start a thread about a deer you dusted with your revolver rather than some sap story about hitting one square in the shoulder tracking it across the country and not finding it before the buzzards do.
Just be careful and deliberate with your shots and you should have no problems.

I'm trying to get to some sort of standardization for long-term purposes. I'd like to not stock 15 to 20 calibers. Garrison Commander is clinging to her 627 and I don't have enough of a death wish to take it. All this talk about revolvers recently has me looking at SP101s or KLCR for a bugout bag revolver. If I'm already feeding a bunch of .357 revolvers - why not get a 1894C?
Josey, we can't find .22LR, but I bet you can just walk into Academy and buy .450 Marlin, huh?

I haven't personally shot anything with one of these rounds, but it's what many people carry.
Saw a poll in some magazine the other day where they asked bush pilots (I trust what these guys say about survival) what they carry. Most carry (in addition to a 12 ga) a .44 mag. 240 gr for moose and bear. .357 would probably be sufficient for moose in urban areas, though I wouldn't mind someone with a shotgun for backup.
I've seen a few guys who carry 10mm too.

I haven't looked for any in a while. I've got about 100 rds of it. That should do me for a while.
It ain't a pinker.

If ~100 rounds of that won't handle it, I guess it will remain "unhandled" (I've got to quit making up words)

I'd feel undergunned up there with less than a 4" .44 magnum. Hopefully to shoot my way to a real gun.
Posted on 2/21/13 at 8:56 pm to DownshiftAndFloorIt
I'd pack a 454 in them parts.
