For academic purposes the name is the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Just like LSU's academic name is Louisiana State University Agriculture & Mechanical College. Both universities use different names for athletics.

I know the justification that you're trying to use. Some people refer to the Univ. of Calif. as "UC-Berkeley" even though designation is redundant. The sole legal owner of the name "Univ. of CA" is the campus in Berkeley.
Simply using the term "Univ. of LA" is forbidden by a state law since no univ. has exclusive rights to that name w/o including the mandated location of the univ.
