Some random thoughts:
- I thought the episode was going pretty slow up to the end there when the awesomeness started. (and I'm not one who disliked last week's episode).
- The shot on Axel actually startled me. Something that doesn't happen very often with any tv/movies, etc.
- The Glenn and Maggie thing doesn't bug me as much as some others. Primarily I think it's because it hasn't dragged on endlessly (yet) and I don't mind them throwing in a little melodrama here and there.
- The Governor is a piss poor tactician. He had the element of surprise, had a man in tower, had a truck of walkers at his disposal, had both Rick and Glenn away and each mentally or emotionally troubled (to wildly different extents of course) and had half the prison group just standing out in the open. And still, by my count, he lost at least two of his people and only took out Axel. I think he needs to brush up on his Richard Winters. I know the argument that he just wanted to create terror but still I think he did lousy job. And his goon squad is starting to take some pretty heavy attrition here lately.

I dont think he wanted to eliminate all of them right then. He released the walkers to show them that he is dangerous. Like you said, if he wanted to kill all of them he could have, but he didnt want to do that.
