I try to only eat out once a week so i figure friday for this Lent would be the best decision. What are some favorite seafood places and dishes in BR?

Let's keep it cheap since I'm still at LSU

I think I read on here recently that Bistro Byronz has really good catfish. I'll be giving that a try tomorrow. Never been before.

At my work, Lent is the busiest time of the year for us. (Dempsey's on Jefferson Hwy)

Gotta warn you.. they go on a wait VERY quickly on Friday nights. But their fry kitchen has been my favorite in BR way before I ever worked there, and the prices are lower than other places. For example, I went to Chimes last night and almost died at the sight of $16.95 fried seafood plates.

If you want to stray from fried, the grilled shrimp salad and the seafood stuffed potato are both AWESOME.

George's thin-cut catfish is a treat.

University Seafood on Highland
They have some coupons some where for 2 for 1 seafood po'boys

Kaminari has an all you can eat sushi buffet at lunch for $10

brightside is pretty cheap

your cheapest option is to get some bolillos (basically an Italian roll) from wal-mart, freeze 'em (so they'll last all lent long), defrost them one at a time in the microwave for 20 seconds, and put the wal-mart brand tuna salad on them. You'll spend a grand total of like 6 dollars and easily get 6 sandwiches out of it. Plus, believe it or not, that tuna salad is some of the best I've ever had from a store.

Ok good, I'm not the only one that believes this place to be TOTALLY overpriced. Was talking about it on here the other day and was met with a barrage of disagreement on it being expensive.

I think I'm just used to us having two sizes, and most places don't. We have basket and platter.
Basket generally feeds one person; platter can feed two unless you're massive eaters.

Most other seafood joints only offer one seafood plate size, and they're the price of our platters. Now.. I rarely get seafood elsewhere so maybe they serve as much seafood as we do in our platter size.. I'm not certain.
But I find that the 7 catfish strips, a side dish, and hushpuppies that come in the basket size for $10 is plenty.
I don't want a $15-$16 plate of seafood, and that seems to be all that is offered at Chimes and Parrain's.

LL is a favorite of mine - honesty is important - especially on the FDB.

Galatoires Bistro

Their 19.05 lunch special is awesome.

Get the French onion soup

Then trout amandine and finish with the bread pudding or pecan pie

You can get a few things with the 1905 but these are my favorite.

The Episcopal church womans group downtown off Florida has been doing a jamming gumbo business for about sixty years. Get there early.

MJ's Cafe on Jefferson (close to government) if you want somewhere to go for lunch. I think they close at 2 or 3. Vegetarian cafe, and yes they have seafood.
2/$10 on their menu of soup/salad/sandwich. Local/Organic ingredients, friendly staff, and a nice atmosphere. Soups are banging.
