However, it remains somewhat different from the traditional story of young women making a life in NYC.
it's mainly about their friendships and relationships with each other, just like every other "coming of age in nyc" story. and it devolves into cliche crap both in these spheres and elsewhere
i have friends who live in brooklyn and push that fake/bankrupt "culture" shite, and they never have a problem getting a job. but since this is the same storyline, the writing is shallow and goes back to that common crutch
quote:
For all of your criticism of it, you sure seem to watch this show a lot.
it reminds me how i can hate things
quote:
is it your position that shows can only be entertaining or interesting if the characters are attractive? This show isn't aimed a you.
no, but i don't find a show that repeatedly shows ugly people naked as entertaining, either
and i absolutely hate the societal reaction that she's brave or this is changing some sort of societal norm. that's utter bullshite
quote:
I repeat, they aren't in business to lose money. It has an audience. As does Treme, albeit smaller than say that "masterpiece", Game of Thrones
HBO keeps shows like this around to win awards until people realize they suck, and then the critics move onto the next show
and why bring up GoT when True Blood is utter shite (and very popular)? GoT is a solid show
quote:
The show is about those people and those people represent a specific kind of person.
and part of the premise of a show like this is to push that type of person as important or good, when they're neither
a show like this isn't trying to just be entertaining, it's trying to make a societal point...so yes, it matters
quote:
How the frick is that "pushing an agenda"?
how is it not?
quote:
People who don't agree or don't like it don't watch it. Why are you watching it again?
to remind myself that i can hate things
plus i always like to keep up with the trends in the thought process of these types of people

Wow, like many other things, you sure do have the entertainment industry figured out. They like awards and audiences. They aren't under the same kind of pressure, however, as the traditional networks. So HBO can have a collection of shows that appeal to smaller audience groups. Although it needs is a steady number of subscribers to make money.
quote:

Well, I don't particularly enjoy looking at "ugly" naked people either, but I kind of think there's more tot he show than that.

So your problem would be with society and more than the show?

I'm with you on True Blood. Would have been a better example. I've never watched a full episode of GoT and have never read the source material.
quote:

If it's pushing and agenda, it's "preaching to the choir" as far as its target audience is concerned. It doesn't have to push anything.

shows like GoT, SITC, and True Blood subsidize Girls and Treme (and the Wire, which is my favorite show of all time)
the main reason the wire got so long was b/c it won so many awards. i think they've explicitly state that
quote:

more to the show? sure
more to continuing to show her naked? no

the show pushes a societal agenda and is a big reason why people think it's so good. the 2 are linked
quote:

it's a solid show that's mainly about politics set in a middle age/slightly fantasy setting
quote:
If it's pushing and agenda, it's "preaching to the choir" as far as its target audience is concerned.
and it's target media, who pushes absolute shite accordingly
when going through this thread last night i read a salon article about how dunham isn't ugly and that's the new normal/pretty. i mean seriously?
i'm a person who has "battled weight issues" (aka, i can be weak and lacking in discipline, which is the real problem and not some undefined, catchy concept) and i think that's disgusting. she's fat. that should be punished by society so she becomes more healthy
but, since this has become a hallmark point of the show, the shitty message is being disseminated
that's the type of shite that people are talking about (with some gay bashing that i think is silly...the gay guy isn't even a major character and there isn't really much bullshite being pushed)
the fact that girls wasn't more criticized and panned for being racist is funny, though

these types of people
people who refuse to recognize their mediocrity and believe there is something noble (dare i say culture) in refusing to realize they're not going to succeed in what they think they should be doing and getting a fricking job and stop living in squalor
like that one guy said last episode...he's a loser. they're all fricking losers. marnie is even mocked for getting a job b/c it doesn't fit into their shitty niche expectations of continuing their insanity
like i said, if you watch girls, as i do, as a view of a bunch of horrible people failing (and laughing at their failures, both as characters and as a show), then it can be somewhat enjoyable

I don't think the show necessarily celebrates this or portrays it as noble. They know they're fricked up. It portrays it's characters with all their pimples and warts. Just like Seinfeld did with its hateful people (and they were . . . writers made a point of it). Or Curb Your Enthusiasm. Both of which, admittedly, are far superior shows.

And the audience is supposed to recognize it as being fricked up.

i don't believe so. the whole basis for shows like this is that noble concept the characters are following
there is a reason they allowed his character to call himself a loser to the naive arechetype
compare that to jessa, who was basically the biggest count ever and may have surpassed hannah as the worst person ever. how did they handle her absolutely horrible behavior? by giving her the sympathetic bath tub scene
if they really wanted to punish her horribleness, she'd have had to explained how she basically acted like a super bitch just to do it and then fricked over a person who was nothing but nice to her. she'd be ostracized and not comforted/accepted
who is actually ostracized and made to look bad? marnie, who didn't even do anything wrong (i mean fricking the gay guy)
quote:
Just like Seinfeld did with its hateful people (and they were . . . writers made a point of it). Or Curb Your Enthusiasm. Both of which, admittedly, are far superior shows.
well the fact that they're actually funny helps
but both of those shows basically are based upon a stated premise that their main characters are selfish/bad people in an attempt to use them to showcase the stupidity of social customs. you can only do that with a character who is so selfish he truly doesn't give a frick
and nobody in curb is as useless as these girls. both shows have characters who were in similar struggles and they talk about how they had to work work work to succeed
the character who is most similar to the girls characters is kramer, who was constantly mocked for being that type of person. kramer was a loser and a leech, and his character was only redeemed b/c he did do stuff to help them out. george was a loser b/c he couldn't hold a job, not a noble person trying to find that perfect job.
the way the shows present losers is completely different. seinfeld openly mocked them, while girls celebrates them and comforts them after they do horrible shite. and they punish the one character who tries to better itself

after thinking about this in the shower, this basically is SITC
main protagonist who is an ugly writer who narrates the story via her writing
"Free spirit" slut who isn't subject to social norms
"serious" character who is somewhat ostracized for her attempts to live a mature life
"naive" character who is learning to be a "Real city girl" by the others

Okay, I've now taken the position that I don't care.

Damn, I might have to give it a try again. The first time I watched the show, it was because a couple of my friends told me how good it was so I went into it thinking it was going to be an entertaining comedy. Instead, I ended up wanting to shoot myself in the face if I had to watch another episode.
But now that I can laugh at these miserable people for failing, well, that is something I do enjoy haha

just remember that hannah is the worst person ever, except jessa may be approaching that level of being an absolutely shitty and ignorant person

I love it.
I think it's hysterical.
And I don't think you are supposed to like or root for Hannah. It's a lot like Louis CK on Louie.

I try to watch it because my wife likes it and I love hbo Sunday nights but I constantly find myself getting on my phone and reading this board.

Louie is a really good person who hates himself
Hannah is a complete piece of shite who has almost no positive qualities an SHOULD hate herself

He generally talks about his children like they are gigantic wastes of air, for one.
To be clear, I find that very, very funny. But I wouldn't put Louie in the "good guy" realm. He's kinda fricked up and putz-y... intentionally so.
Much the same I think Lena Dunham writes Hannah as self-involved, petulant and outright disconnected from reality. I'm not sure you are supposed to like Hannah. In fact, I'm pretty sure you aren't.

his character often goes out of his way to do good things for people. he just hates himself

she is basically the worst person in the world. she's selfish, she rarely ever does anything not for herself, she's lazy, she's fat, she's a whore, she refuses to learn anything about herself, she's completely judgmental, etc etc

Yea, I'm pretty sure Lena wants you to dislike Hannah. I saw some little video clip the other day where Lena was basically making fun of Hannah's terrible fashion. I can't relate to any of the characters except maybe the one who just got a job at the "cool" club. But everyone else is just foreign to me and it's interesting to watch how life works for these type of people. It reminds me a lot of a family member I have who intentional tries to struggle.
