There should be a simple, transparent computer formula. That can be combined with a checklist of rules (like the BCS) that would be designed to prevent nonsensical results, ie FU over UGA this year.

Any system that tries to pick the top 4 out of 120 is going to have inherent flaws. But if it's a clear set of rules with no after the fact judgments, it's a better system. Any committee, or any poll, is going to inevitably be based on the brand names of the teams rather than the actual on the field results from the current season.
