Not really working for assholes. It just depends on the position. If it's a sales position you can bet on it that they'll accept the resignation effective immediately. It's not firing the employee. It is simply accelerating the terms of the two week notice.

Different industries I guess. Being in public accounting, that is something that would not happen. Maybe they are just too concerned with their image and the potential backlash if they were to do it.

Regardless, I would still put in a two weeks notice. Not turning a two weeks notice in based on the assumption that they might tell you to not come back and that they might not pay you for those two weeks is pretty shitty in my opinion. Very immature and childish and not something that should be done in a professional world.
