Ok thanks for the correction on the verbiage I used. This is not something that happens "all the time". If that happens all the time then you must work for some real assholes.

Not really working for assholes. It just depends on the position. If it's a sales position you can bet on it that they'll accept the resignation effective immediately. It's not firing the employee. It is simply accelerating the terms of the two week notice.

How so?

If the company is a group that is directly competing against others for business, they are going to let you go because
1) They know you aren't going to be committed for the last two weeks
2) You could take company info with you
3) You could do something shady

Hell, especially in the O&G industry, if you work anywhere near the business development/trade floor, you are immediately escorted out of the building with security. You aren't allowed to go back to your desk.
