I asked the same question on here a few weeks ago and was told not to wait around on the standalone. After looking into it I decided to just get the mod about a week ago. Having a blast playing so far even with the new update. Granted I only played for 3 days before the new update came out it has definitely changed the game. It felt as if the only real threat was other players but now the zombies are way more dangerous and a legit threat.

So I'd definitely say go ahead and get it. There is no solid timetable on the Standalone and from what I hear they are going to take their time getting it right. I have no idea how much it will cost.
