Why do shows use a ton of directors?

Just finished 2nd season of the wire. Noticed nearly every episode had a different director.
Was curious if other shows do this. Looked at sopranos and dexter on imdb. Both had a dozen directors or so.
1. why?
2. Its weird that I can't even tell a difference. Seems like theyre all the same

for a TV series I'm more interested in who wrote the episode than who directed it.

I'm not sure about the Wire, but a director effects many things, including tone of the scene, how the lines are delivered, and they have input on editing.

The writers and directors follow whatever the creator wants. Think Vince Gillian and David Chase
