why grind, you could apply a thin layer of thin set to level it.

That what I had to do. the arse that Own the house before me glue the wood floor to the concrete with liquid nail.

True. Shouldn't need thin set. Is it just gunk below the carpet or something else?
BarD....Since I've seen you say where you live....did Todd get his shop rebuilt?

It's just the black glue they used during the 60s or 70s

There is this jelly stuff made exactly for that. You can get it at a hardware store or paint store. Actually you can get a similar product at Auto zone called aircraft stripper, but I don't think it is as strong.
Get a big, push flat scraper to apply and remove it.
Be careful because it will burn your skin quickly and your lungs. Don't wear shoes you like either. It ate through boots with a 1" sole last time I used it.
Oh yeah, it burns bad. Can't really feel it for the first 3 seconds, and then it feels like your arm is on fire. If you wash it with water, it just burns worse. Wipe it off.
Eta: Grinders only work on clean concrete. Stain, epoxy, and glue just clog the pads, wheels, and stones. Don't waste your time with that

I have met him a couple times through a mutual friend but don't really know him. He lives several miles from me.
