Phil Mickelson

I was so dissapointed when Phil blew the US Open several years ago with the double bogey on 18. He was really close to winning a US Open early in his career when Payne Stewart outdueled him and beat him by one with a birdie on 17. Then when Phil was finally starting to win majors, he had the US Open in his grasps, and he blew it. I've always blamed his second shot more than his drive. The drive was awful, but he tried an impossible second shot that hit the tree and dropped straight down. If he would have just punched out to the fairway, he would have had a chance to get up and down for the win, but at worst he would have bogeyed and made a playoff.

I've told this story here a few times, but I am literally the closest person to his bag on the 18th tee other than Bones. He pulls the driver out and about 10 of us right there all let out a moan. I should have put my hand on top of the headcover.
