Pop, pop, pop, punt was how I recall he referred to the Tigahs' offensive strategy in the 70s.

Actually the cheer was:

Up the middle, up the middle, up the middle, PUNT!

And Chicken, Charlie didn't average 9 wins a season, because we only played 10, later 11 at the time. I do remember calling a radio station to ask the question, "why do you want to get rid of a coach that wins 77% of his games?" I guess I was an unrelenting PosiTiger even in my teens.

I know you barely post-pubescent fans hate hearing this, but following the firing of Mac, LSU went thru 21 years of roller coaster football, with the nadir being The Curly Debacle.

I told this same story to TAMU fans when they wanted to fire RC. Now they are emerging from a 10-year roller coaster ride. You are fools if you think this can't happen to LSU again. Be careful what you wish for......

In a heartbeat, that is a fact.

Nope, the first nine seasons after he was gone were better than the last nine he was here...

1980: 7-4
1981: 3-7-1
1982: 8-3-1 (Orange Bowl)
1983: 4-7
1984: 8-3-1 (Sugar Bowl, should have been awarded SEC title)
1985: 9-2-1
1986: 9-3 (SEC champions, Sugar Bowl)
1987: 10-1-1
1988: 8-4 (SEC champions, spurned by Sugar Bowl for Auburn whom we beat)

Total: 66-34-5 (.652); 2 SEC championships (should have been 3); 3 major bowls (should have been 4)

Last nine seasons of Mac...

1971: 9-3
1972: 9-2-1
1973: 9-3 (Orange Bowl)
1974: 6-4-1 (really 5-5-1 on the field, but Miss. St. forfeited years later)
1975: 5-6 (really 4-7, but Miss. St. forfeit changed it later)
1976: 6-4-1
1977: 8-4
1978: 8-4
1979: 7-5

Total: 67-35-3 (.652, aided by forfeits); 0 SEC championships, 1 major bowl

The bottom didn't fall out until 1989, when Archer managed to run the program into the ground in only his third year. It's kind of silly to attribute that to firing a coach 10 years earlier, who no doubt would have long retired before then even if he hadn't been fired.

Correct. He averaged 7.6 wins per season.

Probably because he only won 69% of his games for his career, and only 59% over his last six years.

Actually, Mac went through a five year streak of winning nine a season - late 60's to early 70's.
