The Gladiator wasn't very good. The backstory was mediocre. the action was hard to see with the camera moving so much. There was no sense of drama or that Maximus would die early or was in any real danger. And he was almost like a superhero.

The friendship plot was not developed enough with the fellow slaves and his becoming their leader was poorly done. There was no one to challenge him as the leader, he is just made it.

Troy was not very good either, but I don't want to get into its Achilles' heel.

i'm glad I don't get this analytical when enjoying a movie. not saying there is anything wrong with it but it seems like movie viewing would be a miserable experience.

Of course Russell Crowe is not going to die early on in a 2+ hour movie where he is the lead....What movie kills off the lead role early on?

I think it is realistic to believe that a general in a Roman Army will natural become a leader of a group of slaves/peasents/ criminals

Also, Pheonix played the part of a sick/twisted ruler perfectly. He was supposed to be whimpy...

I think when you have a trained Roman war hero fighting slaves and criminals he would look pretty unstoppable

It was a long movie, they developed their friendship pretty well IMO, and when you're fighting for your life every day your going to grow close to the guys you're fighting a long side with
As far as him becoming their leader, he was a leader of the Roman military, and easily the best fighter in the group; if they wanted to live it was in their best interest to follow him, makes perfect sense to me
