Need Rifle help

Two years ago I bought my grandson a Mossberg ATR bolt action 243. I keep it at my house and it's been fired very little. He has killed two deer with it and up until this year it has been very dependable.
The problem: The firing pen is not punching the primer with enough force to fire. It will occasionally fire a round, but nine times out of ten you get a solid click, but the bullet is only dimpled by the firing pin. Do I need to disassemble the bolt and clean or what? And how do I do that?

First, make sure it's not an ammo problem. I'm assuming you have already covered that. Second, disassemble the bolt and clean it well. Brake cleaner works well. If that don't work, throw it away and never buy another Mossberg.

I suppose my question is: Can you get inside the bolt to the actual firing pin and is that necessary? Any other ideas of what is making this pin weak is welcome. You're right about it being a Mossberg, but my grandson was seven years old at the time and the gun was cheap.

Mossberg makes great shotguns...
Their rifles do not quite have the same reputation. Honestly, I'm not sure I would buy anything other than a Browning, Winchester or Savage right now - but that's not the guy's problem.
First things first - thoroughly clean, lube and function check. THEN, test with 3 different brands of factory loaded ammunition. If the failures replicate with just 2 of the different cartridges, you've eliminated ammunition as a source.
Second - if it is, in fact, a light primer strike, the 2 most likely causes are something is impeding the firing pin (assuming the pin, itself, isn't damaged) from going forward (a burr or contaminating debris - you probably have to inspect the entire run, both the bolt and pin) or the mainspring is being impeded (or is damaged). After eliminating those, double/triple check the bolt face and chamber - it doesn't require a lot for a rifle to fire correctly - with your problem, as described, it is either bad primers or malfunctioning firing pin. It's going into battery if you're getting light strikes - this is a limited universe of possible fixes.

Not familiar with mossberg bolts, but you should be able to get into it. Prolly better served to bring it to a smith.

Mossbergs have always been hit or miss. Yes, even their shotguns.

I have a atr in 30.06. I was shooting winchester power x and had this problem. Switched to core lokts, not an issue since.

Ok. I got into the bolt, cleaned and lubricated the spring and all components (not many there). I'm shooting a Winchester Round. The one's that do fire have a deep cavitation on the primer. The one's that don't have just a dimple. I would assume that if it was the ammo that I would be seeing the same or at least similar pin strikes. Looks like a trip to a gunsmith is in order. Thanks for the input guys. I'm thinking there has to be something impeding the spring, but I have no idea how to find or fix it since the problem is inconsistent.

I'm glad my grandfather loved me more than that!
