Explain to me how that is dumb? It's an absolutely useless stat to lead on Tour. Hitting fairways is the most overrated thing in the whole sport, especially when the first cut is a missed fairway. It's a power game now, which was why they tried to change the grooves, but that changed nothing. You hit it hard, then go find it.

It's pretty useless. You have to hit fairways in about 2-3 tourneys a year. All others it's doesn't matter.

Exactly. Tiger missed fairways on 5 of first 6 holes this afternoon and went -3. I'd be willing to bet that there were guys that hit all fairways or at least more than Tiger and scored worse.

Do you play golf? There is a dramatic difference hitting an iron shot from the rough as opposed to the fairway. When they hit it close from the rough, it's why they're pros. But hitting fairways greatly increases the chances of winning.
Tiger would not have a big lead if he hadn't been hitting fairways the first three rounds.

With a 4 iron, yes. With a 8- wedge, no.

No. Scrambling ability is the difference between high level amateur play and professional play.

No. I posted accuracy vs distance. Guess which one has more winners.

Exactly. They can hit it in the rouge and still are able to get the ball on the green within a reasonable distance for birdie. It's a two putt par. For the amateur golfer they hack it into the rouge, then into the bunker, then 10 ft by, etc. The rough is not a huge deal for these guys unless it's the US open or the few other tournaments a year where the rough is 4-6 inches.

Think they posted one of his rounds where he hit 8 fairways and 15 greens. Rough for these guys with a 9 iron or less is like first cut. Like I said it matters in 2-3 tourneys a year. This isn't one of them.

Which hole did Tiger finish with yesterday?

7...he has the par 3 and par 5 left on the nine

Tiger's the only guy who hasn't had a round in the 70s this week (all three rounds in the 60s). One of only 5 guys to have more than one round in the 60s. Crazier than that is that Brandt Snedeker is in 2nd place and shot a 75 in the 2nd round.
I know he's playing his favorite course, but Tiger has been shooting daggers. Giving himself a ton of easy birdies and pars. Hopefully he can continue this on and we can see some great Sunday golf this season. I'd love to see some of these guys neck and neck on Sundays: Mickelson, Tiger, McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, etc. We could have a great golf season ahead.
Despite what anyone thinks, not only does Tiger bring in the viewers, but I think he makes all the other golfers around him play that much better. Some of these guys really seem to turn on the game knowing that Tiger is in the hunt.

you're over simplifying things here. Maybe go pull the fairways hit by those guys in the tournaments they won, not the overall year. Also look at which tournaments they were winning, obviously there are tournaments where hitting the fairway isn't as important as others

And when he has missed, he pulls out a miraculous recovery shot, and then chips in for birdie.
To quote Billy Madison, "He good."

It matters in the US Open, and that's really about it. Maybe Memorial.
All guys care about is that they don't have an off the planet miss. 8 iron in, they don't care if they are in the rough or fairway.
Tournaments are won with the putter and a little luck

Watch Tigers career. Driving accuracy is overrated.

I agree with that, but to saying driving the ball accurately is the most useless stat is not really correct. If it didn't matter and all that matter was hitting the ball as far as you can why would pros ever hit anything other than driver off the tee?
Posted on 1/28/13 at 8:43 am to TigerPhan27
driving accuracy is important if you need to rely on it. if david toms missed more than half his fairways, he would have no chance of winning. tiger and bubba can hit 35% of the fairways and win.
do you not remember the 2008 us open? tiger was all over the place. but his recovering ability and short game were masterful.

Because of the design of a hole and hazards. If there are no hazards where the landing area is, they'll hit driver 100% of the time, and not care whatsoever whether its in the rough.

Yes I do, but I'm not sure you can use the greatest golfer of all time to make a case for all the other pros
