Isn't memory cheap as hell now? I don't get the limitations.
Yes it is.

If they find ways to cheapen the cost to a degree they could triple or quadruple their memory. Just say, 'Hey we're going to have 32 gigs of memory'. That would be quite amazing because memory can do so many more techniques and tricks.
More ram, not just faster, is really important to implement stuff devs want to put into games.

The topic of discussion was the next-generation of home consoles and how expensive memory will make things more challenging for the next home consoles. Yerli has been a strong advocate that home consoles need more RAM, suggesting earlier in the year that home consoles should ship with at least 8GB of RAM so developers could get more out of the hardware.

While talking with VideoGamer.com, Yerli apparently shared new details on the PlayStation 4 (Codename: Orbis) and Xbox 720 (Codename: Durango). When the topic of conversation came to RAM and memory, Yerli shared that “memory is the single most important thing that is always going to be underbalanced - I've never seen a console where the memory was the right balance.”
