That's a lot of crystal for a pale ale. The majority of the recipes I see call for about a 1/2 pound per five gallons. I've never tried amber malt so I can't speak to it, but I do think its important to add a little malt complexity to your pale ale (I use Vienna).

That's what i'm missing. I think i had .5 lb. Munich in my grain bill. I'll add to Original post.
9 lbs. 2-row (82% of grain bill)
.75 lbs. caramel/crystal 20
.5 lbs. amber malt
.5 lbs Munich
.25 lbs. cara-pils
(other grains - 18%)
