Looks like a walnut stain on it to me.

As far as the lock, a simple mailbox style lock may work if he wants something quick and easy. A little routering and a drill hole and he's good to go.

Eta- would keep honest folks out..but not someone with a prybar. Could always trim in angle iron though with matte black paint..then a lock, would give a lot more strength and they have to work for it a bit.

And yeah, this is just to keep the honest person out. As far as the door, it's made out of cypress fence boards that are stained with a jacobean interior wood finish. The inside is lined with carpet. It was more of a budget build, it only cost me $60. If i had more money i would have bought some nicer shelf brackets.

I will be more then glad to build more if people are interested.
