If you get around $700, you could put together a very good build.
2500K
Cooler master hyper 212 plus
Z77 mobo
8gb 1600 ram
1Tb HDD
Radeon HD 7870
650 watt psu
Rosewill challenger case (best case sub $50 IMO)

Do I really need a Tb HDD? I don't have a shite load of music/movies downloaded. I'm hoping 500gb will get me by. What do you guys think of Windows 8 at this point?
Posted on 1/13/13 at 10:35 am to jmarto1
It really depends on how many games you have. I about 200gb left in my 1tb hdd, but I also have about 50 games. I've heard mixed feelings about windows 8. A majority of what I see says you don't need to upgrade from windows 7 to it, but if you're getting a new PC upgrade.

7870 is overkill for someone who doesn't game much. Downgrade that to a 6850 and get a ssd for the os and pair with a 500 gb hdd.
W8 is just w7 with a touch screen overlay, no point in upgrading at all
$700 makes a huge difference vs $500

I'm actually open on the budget but under $500 would be ideal.
I tend to play strategy games like Star Craft, Civilization, etc. I'm more of a console person but when a really good game comes out I want to be able to handle it.

I know, he asked for the impossible. however that woot laptop would have played the hell out of Civ. That one has a step up in graphics from my laptop and mine plays civ just fine.
The $700 build is much more reasonable

Hell, the current one I have plays Civ just fine. I was just hoping to get another PC like I have now that has taken care of me for 4 years. I think I payed $400 off of Tiger Direct for it.

I built mine for $500 and it's doing everything I ask and more. I'm recording gameplay in battlefield at over 50fps with everything on high except for AA.
I do have it overclocked to the gills though.

A lot of people don't like hearing that you don't have to have a rig that cost thousands to play games.
Posted on 1/13/13 at 9:07 pm to stout
I mean, it costed thousand of emotional dollars...

If the OP still wants to build but do it on a $500 budget, he should just use this guide from Toms Hardware.
1155 socket so he can upgrade to an i series in a couple of years.

I'm thinking about upping my budget to around $700. Doing a little research now.

the $700 build i posted will last you the natural life of the components if you upgrade the graphics card down the road (3-4 years)

I might go to the 1tb hd. Wouldn't it be better for me to have a higher rpm?
Posted on 1/14/13 at 10:39 am to jmarto1
if you are going with a HDD for the OS then yes, get at minimum a 7200 rpm drive. if it is a storage drive, you can drop down to a 5400 rpm drive and not see any drop off.
my computer has a SSD for the OS and a 5400 rpm HDD for storage and ive had no problems.

Just received an unexpected sales bonus so I have about a grand to play with. Any suggestions on the hard drive?

If you are going with a $1000 budget, I'd change:
CPU:i5 3570k $230
HDD: WD Black 1TB $90
Vid Card: Sapphire Radeon 7950 GHZ $280
that puts you at $955
eta: need to get a higher wattage PSU if you get that new video card. 650w minimum.

Would that card be overkill for me? The only games I know for sure I will be playing are the Star Craft expansion and I'd like to get on Day Z.
Also, what about getting an SSD just for my OS and reuse my current HD?
