Who gave the best performance?

Uh...definitely Ralph Fiennes. Waltz was good and all but he can't compare to what Fiennes brought to the role of Amon Goeth. It's made all the more chilling considering Goeth was a real human being who did all of those things.

Waltz. Schindler was a cookie cutter character in Schindler's List. I agree with Kubrick's sentiments about that film.

So you are saying Waltz > Fiennes because the character of Oskar Schindler was a cookie cutter? How does that make sense?

Fiennes is your average evil Nazi in Schindler's List. It's not that hard.

And Waltz is your average, evil Nazi in Inglourious Basterds. Quentin Tarantino just added in some hip dialogue to beef up his banter. The only difference is Fiennes was playing a non-fictional character.

You act like Waltz was Col. fricking Klink or something.

At times he was. At other times he was very sinister.

A Schindler Jew saw him and cried in absolute terror at how identical he looked and acted like the real Goeth. It was as if a ghost was brought back to life.

I watched SL for the first time and I honestly didn't like it that much. Having said that Fiennes made the whole thing pretty much worth it. Great performance. Still going with Waltz though. You have to credit half of his success in the film to Tarantino. He was given a great part. Fiennes took a fairly average movie and a slightly above average part and shredded it.

Really?
Fiennes. I never realized anyone thought anything differently.

This is your brain on drugs.
Waltz is the clear answer because of the range he gets to show. He's evil, but you respect him, he's charming and very intelligent. Hell, you feel kinda bad for this evil frick as the movie ends. Fiennes is terrifying and awesome in SL, but he's just one mode the whole time. You're supposed to hate him, you do, and frickin a watchin that dude die feels good.

That has everything to do with his character, not with his performance. Amon Goeth was a REAL person who did everything that was depicted in the film. He sniped Jewish workers from the balcony of his villa whom he felt weren't working hard enough, he massacred hundreds of Jews in the Krakow Ghetto, he abused his Jewish maid, he had the Jewish engineer shot for arguing with one of his officers. He was a real life mad man and, since they were trying to make a film as true to history as possible, you really couldn't do anything but stay true to the events and the people involved.
Ralph Fiennes gave us a performance that showed us real human evil. Christoph Waltz, as good as he was, was simply an over-the-top caricature of the SS.

That stuff all really happened? Thanks, man.
It's not his fault the character's one dimensional, Goeth just is. When you look at it from strictly a character point of view, it's just playing a terrifying psycho. He's basically playing a less sympathetic version of Francis Dolarhyde. Because Goeth was real, that doesn't impact his role in any way. As a viewer it sure does.

I couldn't disagree with that anymore.

Definitely Ralph Fiennes. Waltz has the better dialogue but acting is not primarily about dialogue.
