I see this thrown around a lot, so I checked the numbers.
From 2005 - 2012, LSU is ranked 3rd in winning percentage among all Division 1-A schools. 1st is Boise St, 2nd is TCU. Ohio St and Oregon fill out the top 5. That is out of 120 teams.

I am not a Miles supporter or hater, just a fan that loves data.

Take it for what it is worth.

And looking at the last 5 years only to erase the Saban's players argument - 2007-2012, LSU is tied for 5th in winning percentage behind Boise St, Bama, Oregon, TCU, and tied with Oklahoma. Again, that is out of 120 teams.

I've created a normal distribution to help show this.

I'm not sure, but I just learned in another thread that Vanderbilt would beat LSU and Vanderbilt is on the verge of being a better program

When that is the case, you know you're mediocre

Thanks OP, I am afraid a small but vocal % of people on this sight prefer their often uninformed opinions versus the real facts....but you make a great point...thanks

Ask me after next year. If we lose 3-4 next year then we slipped some. Everybody and their sister wins 10 games in a season now.

How LSU's offense ranked nationally

2012 - 73 (before the bowl)
2011 - 77
2010 - 83
2009 - 112

I'd think calling LSU's offense mediocre is pretty generous.

Not crossing the 50 yard line against Alabama.

More penalty yards than passing yards against Texas A&M

Losing to an ACC team that outplayed us in the trenches.

I think the prblem is the English language. It's a pretty well known fact that people around here have, at best, a pretty shallow knowlege of it.
They don't understand the meaning of words like mediocrity or arrogance. They only know using them makes them feel smart so they rush here to post. Then someone else picks up on it and here we go again.

Thanksf for a little perspective. But All the idiots know on this board are:

New OC
Miles is dumb
Saban/Alabam is the greatestest thing since sliced bread
Fire Javi
RS would've been a first round pick if used correctly
JLEE wouldve beat Bama on 1/9
Miles is conservative
Offensive recruits are dumb to go to LSU
LSU is more talented than the Patriots
LSU should win every game by 100 pts
etc....

I'm not a sunshine pumper or Miles diehard and I get the argument about winning percentage which can't be disputed. The problem I have is that I'd like to believe that the team is striving to play it's best game every game and that the coaching staff is constantly trying to improve areas of weakness. It is hard to see what has occurred on offense over the last several years and believe that our coaching staff feels the same way. Accepting a level of performance on offense that is below mediocre improves the chances of the entire program becoming mediocre.

LSU is not mediocre.

LSU has just hit their ceiling, until the offense improves.

Our defense has taken us as far as we can go.

A person is going to define mediocrity within the framework of their expectations...I think this is true in general, and here for CFB. My expectation for LSU is to be one of the favorites for ATL, and to win if there. By favorite I simply mean if they get there, no one is surprised, it isn't considered an over achievement.

I am not a Miles supporter or hater,

I'm a supporter. I also realize that the Total O has been ranked:

2005 - 60
2006 - 11
2007 - 26
2008 - 55
2009 - 112
2010 - 86
2011 - 86
2012 - 76

This has lead to a lot of frustration, rightfully so. Coach Miles has demonstrated all year that he wants to throw. For a variety of reasons (WR's dropping the ball, OL injuries, Mett being uneven, etc.) it hasn't gone well. He also has made staff hires with the hope of making the O better. And I'll also say I agree with the frustration over 2nd&2, get a first down to close game out, is a time for Copeland/Hill...not throwing. Also the O production made the UF and AU games difficult to watch. It also should be noted LSU beat a very good A&M and SCar team, outplayed UA save last series at the end of each half. That all said, I think Coach Miles biggest task is still improve the O (maybe 2013 it happens, we'll see). Many have given up on this, I haven't.
