Coaches should coach and head coaches should manage and make decisions. These days, the game is too complex for a head coach to have enough time to devote to gameplanning and playcalling, while still doing all the extra crap that being a head coach requires.

For whatever reason, however, Miles believes that game planning/play selection is his responsibility. Maybe it's a Schembechler thing.

Anyone know how many playcalling head coaches (Spurrier, Leach, etc.) are out there right now in comparison to the game manager type head coach?

I don't think we need to speak in absolutes. I think Sean Payton does a good job in doing both. I think it can be done. I actually like a CEO formula though. Especially in a situation where the Head guy struggles with that a bit. Les freeing himself up to identify a timeout situation at the end of the game without letting 28 seconds elapse is a good thing in my opinion.
