From a perspective of the University of Michigan standpoint, why is Les Miles not going on his fifth year as Head Coach of UM?? He had proven he could continue success at a major program. He had taken his team to the conference championship in the toughest league in the country. His recruiting prowess was established. Although not known at the time he would be playing for a NC in a few weeks. His character is lauded on this board. He played there and was a disciple of their legendary coach. He coached there for many years. Seems like they would have gone full guns to get him in the program. And if so I think he would have jumped at the time. Seems like I remember a major faction within the university not high on the idea. Anybody know the reason for this? I do not think LSU has anyone with this list of attributes currently that could go after when we have a job opening. Have always been curious about this. Anyone know WHY NOT???

my theory
Michigan offer Miles the job in 2007
Miles accepted the offer in principle
Someone within the Michigan AD leaked the info to ESPN
ESPN reported Miles to Michigan
Miles basically said that if he could not trust Michigan right then and there, that he had no reason to ever trust them at any other time. he then told them no thanks
Michigan has since offered, but I believe Miles is very happy now in his position of competitiveness at LSU and within the SEC

Wait, is there a thread limit? Is there a fine we pay for reading something not 100% original? Is there anything LSU related that hasn't already been discussed here? Is there a statute of limitation on when it becomes ok to resurrect a topic?

It's also in Miles' contract if he takes a coaching job with Michigan, he would owe LSU one million dollars.
And it explicitly says Michigan.

If he left today, Coach Hud from ULL would jump in a New York or a Lafayette second.

I thought there was an article in SI or somewhere after the NC game where Miles stated he tried to get Michigan more interested in him being the coach but to no avail. I don't think an offer was ever made and the leak was to pressure the AD and Pres. Into making an offer. But who knows. I just look at the Rich Rod fiasco and the Hoke Luke warm hire and wonder WTH was UM thinking?? if LSU had a relatively young coach who had been in the pros and coached as an asst at major colleges, then proved successful at a mid major at the time, then had an Major college team on the cusp of a NC, I think we would all be going apey to get that person!! And the buyout would be taken care of by TAF or others. Whether you like Miles or not, it is curious.

There was a whole book chapter written on this topic. Go read it. Summary: Lloyd Carr hates Miles and therefore scuttle Michigan's attempt to offer him the job.

So why does Carr hate Miles?? Must be a significant reason to overcome all the positives of the hire??

Here is a link to the book:

P.S. It contains a detailed account of Michigan's botched attempt to woo Miles from someone who was embedded in the program.
