Maybe start with a good small batch Bourbon. Something like Four Roses Small Batch. Jeffersons Reserve Very Old Very Small Batch is a wonderful Bourbon that is very smooth and easy to drink.

I'll slowly kill the handle of makers first then go from there. I drank whiskey on the rocks for almost my entire freshman year then slowly got away from it. I was drinking crap whiskey though due to lack of funds. Anyway, I still loved it and need to get back to drinking it.
