If you only look at him as a coach he wasn't a failure. He was in over his head with the complete personnel control that he demanded though. Almost all of his signings and trades didn't work out and he drafted two worthwhile players in 2 years in Channing Crowder and Brown, who was the number 2 pick. That was supposed to be his strong suit, building through the draft.

He's obviously a smart guy and a great coach, if he went back to the NFL with a good GM I'm sure he'd succeed.

Sabans first draft he grabbed 6 players, 3 are still in the NFL as either a starter or back up and 1 washed up last season, 1 lost a career due to injury, and 1 didn't do anything (6th round pick)

His second draft had 6 picks as well and 4 of those are still in the NFL in some capacity. 7 players out of 12 still being in NFL after 5 years isn't bad and only 3 picks in first two rounds each year. Again no superstars or pro bowlers but still players that have contributed to other teams and still on active rosters. Doesn't mean he was good or bad, obviously he saw talented individuals if they are still in the NFL they just were never superstars to help him take over the team to next level.

Again all I am stating is he wasn't as bad as some like to make him out to be in the NFL. Was he great? No was he good? Eh maybe a lot of coaches have a worse record after 2 years who turn out great. We will never know as Saban took off back for college when things didn't go his way

On phone and no luck finding their 05/06 FA signings to see who was who.
