He must have done something right as they went from 20th to 15th to 5th in defense from season before he got there to leaving. They fell back to 30th the season he left....
He didn't handle the players right but the Dolphins did improve from that last season of Dave to Sabans first season. He realized he wasn't ready and went back to his best opportunity.

If you only look at him as a coach he wasn't a failure. He was in over his head with the complete personnel control that he demanded though. Almost all of his signings and trades didn't work out and he drafted two worthwhile players in 2 years in Channing Crowder and Brown, who was the number 2 pick. That was supposed to be his strong suit, building through the draft.
He's obviously a smart guy and a great coach, if he went back to the NFL with a good GM I'm sure he'd succeed.
