This couldn't be more incorrect. I have been all over the world with my AMEX and I am consistently traveling and I can count on one hand the amount of times I had to pay with another method.

Exactly
Almost very restaurant, dept store, gas station, etc all accept Amex
I've been turned down very few times

Growing up, I remember only the rich folks carried American Express back in the middle late 90s. They've done a great job molding that perception. When I got approved yesterday for the Gold Premier, I won't lie, I felt like I achieved some rare financial status 
I know they probably give them out to every podunk that wants one, still, it seems it still has that feel of exclusivity- whether just perceived.
