It seems like the debate over a successful coach and a successful season come down to whether or not you believe in LSU Exceptionalism. If you feel that the Louisiana football culture and resources are equal to or below other SEC teams, and finishing at the top half of the pack with our fair share of championships is a realistic goal, then you are more than likely satisfied with the status quo.

On the other hand, if you feel like Louisiana has a superior high school football system, with better talent than the rest of the country and that having only one major state university competing for that talent, gives us a distinct advantage over any other SEC football program, you are probably not satisfied with anything but championship seasons.

My opinion is that we do have a slight advantage with just a single major state university, but other states such as Florida and Texas have similar high school talent and LSU has done slightly better than should be expected, in recent years.

eta: Much better after edit. let me read now.

I think there is no reason why we should be inherently any better than Texas, OU, USC, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan, etc, etc.

And yet we do better than most of the most prestigious programs in college football on a yearly basis. Just because we dont win a championship, doesnt mean we are a failure. Just because weve never had a dynasty doesnt mean we are a failure.

Im fine with 1 NC every 10 years. Heck, that would mean we are at worst a top 10 program. Weve had 2 in the last 10. If we get another by 2020, ill be happy. I'd argue that being a top 5 program is overachieving, while being top 10 is just right where we should be.

High expectations is one thing. Completely unrealistic expectations is another.

Tulane will become what it once was IMO. When we had a hard time recruiting against them we were not as dominant.

We have enough built in advantages to finish at or near the top of the SEC in most years, with the right coach. We're not head and shoulders above everybody else in the country. We still need things to fall our way. If anything but an undefeated season and a BCS title is a disappointment to you, you're going to be disappointed more often than not. Bama's going through an amazing string right now, but the wheel will turn sooner rather than later, Injuries, academics, funny ball bounces, and they'll be wondering why they can't get over the hump like they used to. That's football.

I have no idea what Exceptionalism means to a college football team. It's a game playd by young men not a plan for world domination. We've done well and I'm happy with our success this decade.
