They knew they could, but it was not a sure thing. That's why everyone had to wait to see what happened. The wait is what cost Tech a bowl game. They needed to know that the Liberty Bowl and the HOD Bowl were not going to be available. They found that out too late in the day.

one more time

it was pretty much a given Boise or the MAC winner was going to make the BCS once UCLA fell to Stanford.

BVDV basically put all his marbles into hoping Texas would upset Kansas State in Manhattan. Coming form the Big 12, I know that winning at KState is tough and Bill Snyder has owned Mack Brown's arse at home.

It WAS NOT WORTH THE RISK.

The odds were greater than 75% a non AQ was going to get in.

As for the HOD, 9 Big 12 teams are bowl eligible which meant it was going to be filled. It was a near impossibility they would pass over Texas Tech, Baylor, or Okie Light.

Trying to get the Liberty/HOD was asinine based on the things that needed to happen.

It was NEVER a good gamble, was always likely to fail and it bit him in the arse hard when it did.

and one more time, had the Liberty actually promised to take La Tech, they would have gone ahead and given the formal invitation just like all the other small bowls trying to snag a non contracted team do.

Your AD is either full of shite and lying to you or flat out incompetent.

Considering he pulled all the strings he could to move the A&M game to later in the year to help sell more tickets (and I've talked to many A&M admin people who 100% believe this was the case) I lean towards him being full of shite.

Tech needed 3 things to happen to get either Liberty or HOD Bowl:

1. #21 NIU to beat #16 Kent St (no BCS bid)
2. Oklahoma to beat TCU (get BCS bid)
3. Kansas St to beat Texas (get BCS bid)

By Saturday night, it had all happened like they wanted. If any of those 3 things didn't happen, they would have gone to the Independence Bowl. But they all happened.

The fly in the ointment was that NIU jumped from #21 to #16 and made the BCS game, knocking Oklahoma out of a BCS game. That shifted every Big XII team down 1 notch and Iowa St was invited to the Liberty Bowl.
