meh. I think people project their Machiavellian bullshite on public figures too much. It's probably that Mack actually likes Major and sees a lot of potential in him. Guy is doing what he thinks is best and while I'm certain his legacy is now on his mind, he's not trying to hamstring the program to make himself look better

Maybe but I think you'd be surprised at the lengths that Mack has gone to in order to protect his image as "Mack Brown Texas Football." Summoning multiple groups of media to his office to berate them and threaten them with restricting access to the program when even a hint of negativity is reported. Go check out what Brian Jones (former player, CBS Sports) has to say about that - he's been one of the summoned.

Mack does like Major and thinks he'll be a great coach, no doubt - but that may be just part of his pushing Major for the job when he leaves. And I tend to downplay all conspiracy theories.

Back on the subject of Gary Barnett:

Colorado should have been in the national title game in 2001 over Nebraska (they beat Nebraska 62-14 and won the Big 12)

Barnett took Northwestern to the Rose Bowl and won the Big Ten.

I think he had one losing season (2000) with Colorado, but even that season he snapped the nation's longest home winning streak (at A&M).

oh, having a "personality" as a coach is a huge boon in college athletics since players come and go. He's aware of that and goes to great lengths to protect and enhance his image. The problem horns are having is that all the things he's done to enhance this over the years has been a source of pride and now you are through the looking glass and realize it's all bullshite. But it always has been. It's just that when it doesn't work it looks comically inept. He's not suddenly Machiavellian, you're just seeing who he's always been more clearly (the worst thing to happen to me was clearly recognizing who RC really was early and having to watch that guy coach us another 6 years).

On another note, I've met Mack a few times. He's a super nice guy and will glad hand all day. Didn't even mind that I was an Ag and even remembered me when we met again (it helps that the few times we've met I've been with a big booster I'm sure). While I have had a few pretty negative experiences with our own leadership, I genuinely liked Mack so maybe I'm the one not being objective

...the old 1300AM, Chip Brown, Ketchum, that entire 1530AM debacle

there are way too many stories about how much Mack strongarms media folks that report non-sunshine pumping ideals for it not to have some truth to it
