a 300yds allowed per week defense would be #3 in the NFL right now.

Saying we dream of having an average defense is one that gives up 353yds per week

The next 4 games will be crucial for offseason decision making.

Ellis is gone. Smith likely gone. Can Vilma be a viable OLB? More important, would we be better off using the $4.8mil of cap savings elsewhere? Harper & Bunkley have to be examined as far as their production vs. $24mil net cap reduction. Finally healthy we need to see Hawthorne accelerate to contending for most tackles (like he did in Seattle). Can Tez Wilson & Juneyah (when back) be more than situational role players?

Sorry blues. I know everyone is trying to look for good things, but it's hard to find it in this defense. Philly and Oakland are not good teams. San Fran has a second year QB who looked like that today, but looked like Steve Young against us. 1 forced fumble, 2 sacks, 1 interception and 737 yards allowed in two games against Atlanta.

I'm not saying they aren't doing better. Only that they couldn't possibly have done worse then they started and they are still below average.

Blast away. This defense still isn't stopping the run and not playing defense worth getting excited about.

The only thing I can say positive is that every game they get absolutely run over at the beginning of the game and then make adjustments and play better towards the end.

They gave up a bunch of yards early on against Atlanta, but turned things around and played a very good game. I don't count the Philly and Oakland. They are bad offenses. And they both got 400+ yards on us. And it was only 6 weeks ago we were giving up 500+ to Tampa and Denver.

I need to see more before I call it a 'trend'.

Like I said, they are playing better. But the bar was pretty damn low before the Philly game. We aren't asking for much, an average defense at best. We give up too many yards and don't tackle well and don't create turnovers consistently enough to be a good defense.

I think I'm agreeing with y'all, I'm just not excited about improving into an average to below average defense.
