Credit offers more protection to the consumer.

Debit is only for those who cannot control or get credit.

That wasn't his question. His question was whether he should choose debit or credit when using his debit card for a transaction.

To the OP. I choose credit because I like to skip the PIN step. When debit cards were newer and this option came out I always chose credit because I was told that the transaction fees went on the seller if you chose credit. I cannot confirm this information as true but I got in the habit of choosing the credit option and still do to this day.

I guess my wife and I are the only two exceptions to this "rule."

That's not true. Visa/MC debit cards offer the same protection as credit. The disadvantage is - with debit you have to wait to get the money back, and with Credit you simply wait to have the obligation to pay removed. And on debit, if the fraudulent charge causes an NSF on a check you wrote, your bank may not waive that fee. As for disputing a purchase with a merchant, there is absolutely no difference whether you purchased with a Debit card or Credit card.
