I actually think we are pretty set on the d line. We obviously could be a ton better but it is night and day the amount of pressure we are getting on the qb now. Hicks is the Motherfricking truth!
I think OT is a far more pressing need.

probably going to need to replace Ellis though
I'm not saying we should use our first round pick on a DT either, just seems like we need to bring another guy via free agency or the draft. I think we need another DE though. Will Smith can't really get after the QB anymore...
but I agree with you about Hicks. Dude looks like he will be a force in the middle of the line for years
I also like Bunkley. Those guys doing the mock drafts randomly on the internet are being lazy if they think Bunkley isn't making a difference on this defense. He hasn't been out there on the majority of the big runs we have given up. The opponent catches us slipping with a nickel defense and gashes us.

I would do bad, bad things for the Saints to be able to draft Werner. Kid is gonna be an absolute stud in the NFL.

I really like Sheldon Richardson. Really really like him. He's the only impact player on Missouri's D, teams scheme around doubling him and getting away from him, and he still dominates at times.
Dude's gonna be a big time interior lineman in the NFL imo.

I understand Bunkley's role as a run stopper and think he has played okay. My questioning of keeping him is a straight examination of Price/Production ratio going forward.
The past 3 games his snap count participation-
21 of 73 29%
27 of 60 45%
21 of 73 29%
In his past 4 seasons when starting he had 123 tackles. This year now approaching the 75% mark of the season he has 7 tackles for the Saints.
He gets almost $22mil for the next 4 years. I don't see paying $5mil a year to a guy not even playing 1/3 of the time. He was even inactive for at least one game. The past 3 game participation for the next 4 years would be paying him over $14,000 per play. Simply does not compute to me.
You lose $4mil in cap cutting him. You save almost $17mil so a net $13mil. That can be invested more wisely than for a one or two down player at best.
EDIT- $4.5mil bonus + $5.4mil guaranteed salary make this proposition void. Either he'll have to assume more reps or this will be one of the worst contracts of the Loomis era. Stuck with him. And once more- I'm not down on him for play, just that he is getting paid way more than what he produces. His pay is headed towards what guys like Suh or Wilfork are getting.

Hey Blues, have you checked the Profootball Focus review of the game on Thursday night?
pretty brutal man. They don't even give the defense any credit. Thought I'd leave the link here though. They aren't high on Will Smith or Vilma.
Click
I get what you are saying about Bunkley though. He has done a hell of a job but he really isn't out there enough. I'd like to have him back but would understand if we moved in a different direction.

We should not take Mingo. He is a project. Our D does not have time for a project.
I'd like Jenkins or Hankins myself.
Early in the season I really liked Werner. I think he's got the talent to be the next Watt-esque player in the NFL .. but I think we need interior guys more, so unless we're bumping someone inside, we should avoid Werner.

Bunkley - his next year's salary is guaranteed so he should stay. If he's getting paid, we should at least use him in a rotation on the early downs. AFter next year, when the SB cap hit would fall to 2.7 mil against a 4.4 mil base salary, then he might be gone.
As for the draft, I'd be quite happy grabbing Jake Matthews. Bushrod is a UFA after this year and Strief and Brown are only signed through next year. We need to rebuild the line with all the potential losses at OT the next two years.

I didn't understand that at all when I read it.
It's like they blame the loss on Brees and the defense only.
It was a terrible analysis in general, I didn't see many grades for individual players at all.

that was a little lightweight analysis
one I thought was noteworthy-
The two missed tackles for Malcolm Jenkins in this game took his season total to 20, and this marks the seventh time this season that he has missed more than one tackle in a game. Jenkins is, somehow, on course to break Tanard Jackson’s mark of 24 from last season – the most we have ever recorded for a safety in a single season.
legit criticism: I am pretty tired of his whiffs diving & arm tackling rather than getting there and wrapping up.
---------------------
I edited the 2013 defense thread. Bunkley is too costly to let go. And even though I don't think Harper can perform up to his $11mil worth of cap the next two years the likelihood of him gone is prolly too low to seriously consider.
End result, with Bunkley, Hicks, & Tom Johnson I don't see DT with the 1st Rd unless it was an overwhelming value like Lotulelei or Hankins.

it really was. I knew there must have been a screw up in coverage on Tony Gonzalez's TD catch though. I mean Curtis Lofton had no help on one of their top redzone targets
Lofton did everything he could but that was a good throw and catch on the Falcons part.
They also singled out Malcom Jenkins in that review for his missed tackles...just rough. I figured they would give some props to our D-line for disrupting some plays but no. Terrible.

You know who else won't give the defense any credit?
Grandmaster Wang.
Ever since the Denver game where he declared that the defense is worthless and can't improve and anyone who thinks that is moronic, he hasn't even said the word "defense."

the trend is your friend
SF is the only NFL team allowing less than 300 yds a game. Average is 353 yds per game. Finishing the season off at 350 or less yds per game would be a huge building block for next year and figuring the personnel decisions going forward.

It sounds like you're saying you want us to finish the season with an average 350 yards per game.
Since we are now averaging 440.5 yards per game, we'd have to allow an average of 80 yards per game for the next 4 games to attain the 350 average.

Sheldon is a top 5 talent physically. The problem is he's an immature, inconsistent do he. No thank you! If you got him to play 100% though you'd get a guaranteed Pro Bowelr

nah, meant just stay under 350 for the final 4 games. THAT would be what we were hoping for at the start of this year. Establishing that we can consistently do that for a third of the season after the historically bad start will say a lot about Spags & the development of the scheme.

All right, I see.
At this point, I'd just like to not win the record for the most yards allowed in a season in NFL history.
Right now, it's 6,793.
We need to average under 376 the last 4 games to stay under.

We play the 9th, 10th, 12th, and 19th ranked Offenses in YPG. All average under 375, we might be able to do it.

kinda pathetic sad, huh?... We're playing to not be the worst in history!
