Dear god, avoid any and all Ohio State and Alabama prospects. Sheldon Richardson, DaMontre Moore, fine. But, I am sick and tired of the garbage that comes out of Alabama and Ohio State. Seriously, can you name me one defensive stud in the NFL from either of those schools right now?

looking to keep a little draft talk going...

Let's say they sign a free agent to be the pass rushing DE we have wanted. Insert whichever name you like (Avril, Michael Johnson, etc). They could still take another DE 1st Rd if the value was compelling but that doesn't happen often. Elite pass rushers tend to go high if anything. The question then is...

If not DE what names would be at the top of your want list at #12 (current spot) or at #22? (I won't mind this all being futile if we end up #31 or 32)

mine in no order:

#12- Taylor Lewan OT Michigan, Johnthan Banks CB MSU, Star Lotulelei DT Utah, Manti Te'o LB Notre Dame (might be a tough fit but a talent that may not be passable at 12)

#22- Eric Fisher OT Central Michigan, CJ Mosley LB Alabama, Johnathan Jenkins DT Georgia, Xavier Rhodes CB Florida State

adding NFP Mock

12. New Orleans Barkevious Mingo* DE LSU Will Smith is 31 and the Saints struggled greatly to consistently pressure the quarterback in recent seasons, so they are willing to take gamble on Mingo who has rare explosiveness and physical talent, but had a disappointing 2012 season.

13. Miami Sam Montgomery* OLB LSU The Dolphins' pass rush has been inconsistent as offenses are able to focus all their attention on Cameron Wake, so getting Montgomery would give them a dangerous pass rusher opposite Wake.

hmmm, what if both are available to the Saints? Who ya want then?

Mingo is too small to be a DE at the next level. Montgomery makes more sense then him. I also wouldn't be opposed to going offensive tackle either, how is the Lewan guy from Michigan?

Mingo does look more prototypical 3-4 LB but if ya grade him as the special talent he can work too.

Chris Clemons, Dumervil, Bruce Irvin, Freeney, Umenyiora, even Junior Galette are all successful undersized 4-3 DEs. We were slobbering pretty hard at the thought of getting similar sized Aldon Smith in 2011 before he zoomed up the charts.

It did seem like a disappearing act for Mingo this year. What's the take from the LSU Jack Handeys?

HERE is a fresh take on Mingo. If you're still penciling him in as a Top 10 pick you're prolly going off draft talk from before this past season.

When the 2012 season began there was enormous hype surrounding Mingo, not only coming our early for the 2013 Draft, but also that he could challenge to be the first defensive lineman drafted despite not starting for even half of the 2011 season. Viewed as an elite athlete with rare first step initial quickness, Mingo flashed the ability in 2011 to be a dynamic edge rusher along the lines of Dwight Freeney and DeMarcus Ware. However, in 2012 Mingo was not the impact player he was expected to be and for a player with such great physical gifts he was a non-factor in too many games. Playing many more snaps on a regular basis in 2012, Mingo did not consistently show the explosiveness off the ball to threaten the corner as a speed rusher. Additionally, he tended to rush the passer upright, without leverage and displayed little to no aggressiveness rushing the passer. Additionally, he struggled greatly vs. OT run blocks and was tied up and controlled by blocker too easily. While many may believe Mingo should come out early, we believe he no doubt should stay in school as he is not assured of being a first round pick right now and if he does not greatly improve his play, whether in college or in the NFL, he will end up having a short NFL career.

JMO but unless he puts on more wght i think Mingo will be a HUGE bust in the NFL. Like BLUESOLVER has seen(apprec. the invite to this discussion) i would love CB Xavier Rhodes(FSU) in the 1st rd. UNLESS!! Bjoern Werner is available which is very unlikely.

He is still a top 15 pick on potential alone IMO.

disagree, ya don't think his disappearing act this season will count?

His stock has dropped enough I think he will have to consider more deeply to even declare. Late 1st getcha 4 yrs somewhere around $3mil. Stay another year and try to get assured top 10 status and ya reach $6+mil

His 4 sacks this year are not an anamoly from his overall play.

But we have to take consistency into consideration, it's prime time to show yourself off to be picked the highest. We already have an inconsistent DE in Smith which I'm hoping we cut.

Big Will isn't inconsistent to me. He's consistently just okay and hardly ever dominant or great. And he's getting old.

It's gonna cost $5.5mil of cap to cut him and save $9mil. So net +$4.5mil. I think we can do better for that amount.

I'm inclined to go UFA for the pass rushing DE. Get someone that has a proven record that you know what they can do in the NFL. The biggest names expected now are Osi, Avril, & Michael Johnson. There have been plenty of highly touted college pass rushers that have ended up so-so in the NFL.

I agree with you going to FA for pass-rusher I wouldn't mind osi or M. Johnson to shore up the ends. But we need to get some younger players with dominant attitude hence... Hicks, Galette

One of the schmo's on CBS has Mingo going 2nd overall as of 12/4... No way is he the best defensive player in the country.

When Mingo runs a mid 4.6 he will be right back into first half of 1st round.

would agree if put "right back into the middle of the first round". Still a lot of skill to lust after, just not getting top 10 love after how invisible he turned this year. A highlight game against Clemson would help his stock a lot too.
