It's big and hard. Feels like a big puss ball or something. If you made it perfectly round it would be as big as a softball.

Should I poke it with a needle or not?

If your dog has a softball size growth on neck you probably want to see a vet. If you had this on your neck would you want your dog sticking it with a needle?

I think this warrants a trip to the vet...

Bring it to the vet, just had a tumor removed fom my lab, was just under her skin and not bothering her at all, came back as stage III soft tissue carcinoma.

My dog had the exact same thing when it was 6 months old. It was an abscess and we never figured out what caused it. It will eventually burst and you need to bring it in so they can rinse it an put in a small drain tube. Good luck and I hope it's nothing more serious.

need pics for a proper diagnosis

also, how long has it been there and what is the average rate of growth? (how long has it been growing ever since you noticed it)

That thing hasn't grown has it?

It was reaching softball size on Saturday.
