for draft picking that is. Until the wins came there was a lotta possible high pick draft speculation. If held today we're at the #17 spot. Plenty of early mockers are putting the Saints into the mid-20's now. Oh how things change. Skip class and get up to date in your draft outlook-
So to update Montgomery, Mingo, & Werner are all now off the watchlist. Ditto OTJoeckel.
Coming to the end of the regular college season who might be on the watch list now (#20 or lower)?
Here's a few to keep an eye on-
OT we really dunno what the plan is. Bushrod is UFA and now we don't get any more read on Charles Brown except that he is injury prone. A step in and replace draftee is not out of the question-
OT Taylor Lewan Michigan- prolly gone but #2 OT on my list
OT Jake Matthews TxAM- the lower the pick the more this might fit. Yes, another Matthews to the NFL. This is the son of HOFer Bruce. Like LSU with two elite DEs the Aggies have that at tackle
Lower picking could get in the range of taking the top 4-3OLB. I've liked Sean Porter TxAM but his stock isn't this high. Day one starter might be-
CJ Mosley Alabama- you've prolly seen him. Looks like an NFL playmaker
Dropping out of the sweepstakes for the top 4-3 DE pass rushers we get to the question if some of the 3-4 OLB types might fit. Won't address those. The only one that might fit into a 4-3 and mid/late 1st Rd range is Dion Jordan Oregon
The Saints are a strong BPA team. Jabari is 30 and PRob has had some struggles out of man coverage. Doubt they would get top CB Milliner here but two they may not be able to refuse-
Johnthan Banks MissSt & Xavier Rhodes FlaSt- both 6-1 & NFL starter looking.
Purely on the speculation that Harper's $15mil cap hit the next two years is too heavy in proportion to his performance-
Eric Reid LSU- with the above assumption he looks the part to be perhaps the first safety taken. If ya haven't noticed safeties in Spags scheme are much more left/right similar roles than free/strong different.
Liking the way Hicks is looking but dunno if they are sold on Bunkley. His cap hit steps up big in '13. It would cost $4mil lost cap to save almost $17mil over the next 4 years. Some DTs could fit in the second half of Round 1-
Some will go before but Jonathan Jenkins Georgia might be a can't pass on. Yeah, maybe he can exorcise the ghost of another UGA Jonathan and Fatass Ellis busts.

And you saved me
From myself

I'd like to throw David Amerson's name in there.
Solid CB.
Solid CB.

What did you do to disappoint him?

Amerson is good. I've seen him projected more into the 2nd Rd tho IF he comes out. He's only 20, another year in and he could elevate towards first CB taken contention in 2014. Know if he's declaring early?
I'm not that big of a Reid fan myself but that's the current stock outlook from what I gather. The better the Saints do the more likely Harper will be back with the big cap gulp.
Who else in the second half of the 1st Rd?
dlP is RFA next year. He's been surprisingly good but isn't dominant. Anybody for Barrett Jones as an All Pro center for the next ten years?

I don't want to draft for Spags system. I want the Saints to do what they've done for the past few years and draft BPA. What if Spags is here for two years and leaves? We are left with system players who can't do what we need them too.
I'm not against bringing in a system FA. They only have so many years. A first round draft pick (hopefully) will be around the franchise for years to come.

I've actually been wondering about this. He can play any spot on the line and very well at that.

I've been wondering about this too. However, given the amount we put into the linebackers last off season, would that stop us from selecting him? I love his ability he's displayed to play in space covering the TE or RB.

Lofton check
Hawthorne & Chamberlain check
Vilma at $4.8mil +1.1mil bonus... I dunno. Love the guy and he's a great leader but for the production to cost ratio I'm not sure. Redo his deal and it gets a lot easier.
As said, Saints are strong BPAers. So if it was Mosley or even Barrett Jones I could see either happening.
Talking of safeties I think the two safeties that are about the same more than the old free & strong types is a trend in the NFL that will only continue to get stronger. So IF Harper's money seems too much I could see that as a pick the same way.

True.
Another idea i've been kicking around with friends is the possibility of a trade up. If we remain in this area of the draft, are any of those top d-lineman worth moving up say 7-8 spots... or should our goal going into this draft be just to acquire as many pieces? (This is assuming we get our 2nd pick back , which i believe is still possible).
Bonus ?: Any specific reason for Sean Porter's fall?
