And while we're bringing up contentious subjects, is there a general consensus on the subject of fruitcake? Or am I still the only person in the world who loves it?

You can use it for a door stop or as a wieght to press down on pate as it cools to get the excess fat out of it, and get it to set properly.

Fruitcake is wonderful. I made a few loaves of Alton Brown's Free-Range Fruitcake 3 years ago and I'm still eating on them. I cut off a slice every few months, then re-douse with Maker's Mark, wrap in cheesecloth(available at your local grocery, hardware store or Wal-mart) and store it airtight. Ages beautifully.
